🚨 URGENT: On July 28th, 16 oil blocks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo will be auctioned off to oil giants, 9 of which lie in the Congo Basin, the world’s second largest carbon sink after the Amazon and largest tropical peatland complex.

The peatland stores approximately 30 billion tons of carbon - equivalent to about 82% of annual global carbon dioxide emissions. The auction is being celebrated by some as a chance for the DRC to become one of Africa’s leading crude oil exporters - but it would have catastrophic consequences for the global climate, local people and biodiversity.

The DRC needs debt cancellation and global support for a just transition, not further oil colonialism and exploitation of natural resources.  This auction will lead to further conflict and human rights abuses, and will be catastrophic for the climate and local biodiversity.
